We recently had the incredible opportunity to explore Peru and stay at some of the luxurious Belmond properties. Unfolded Travels is a preferred partner of Belmond, so we were invited to experience their hotels and luxury trains firsthand. We are also able to secure VIP perks for all of our clients who book hotels through us, read till the end to find out how!
From the serene landscapes of the Sacred Valley, to the awe-inspiring heights of Machu Picchu, each Belmond hotel provided a distinct experience. If you’re not familiar, Belmond properties are never built from scratch. They only utilize existing buildings, which allows each hotel to have a true sense of place. Here’s a closer look at these extraordinary luxury hotels and to see what makes them perfect for your Peruvian vacation.
Miraflores Park, Lima
Miraflores Park in Lima was our starting point and immediately set the bar high for luxury and service. Located in the chic Miraflores district, the hotel offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean that are breathtaking (especially from the rooftop pool!).
During our stay, we enjoyed a lovely dinner at Tragaluz restaurant. It was a feast of delicious authentic Peruvian food! The hotel’s proximity to Lima’s best restaurants and historic sites made it easy for us to explore the city.
To unwind, the Zest Spa offers treatments that blend modern wellness with traditional Peruvian therapies, providing the perfect way to relax after a day of exploration.
Rio Sagrado, Sacred Valley
Leaving the urban charm of Lima behind, we ventured into the the Sacred Valley. We stayed two nights at Rio Sagrado. This hotel feels like an authentic Andean village, with terraced suites and villas nestled along the serene banks of the Urubamba River.
We arrived to discover baby alpacas roaming freely around the property, and we had the opportunity to bottle feed them! The hotel offers a variety of activities. Enjoy horseback riding, river rafting, or unwind at the Mayu Wilka Spa with treatments using locally sourced ingredients.
What truly stood out was the personalized service that Belmond is renowned for. As we prepared to leave, an on-site weaver presented us with handmade luggage tags, each beautifully inscribed with our names. It was a touching memento that we’ll have forever, reflecting on our unforgettable stay at Rio Sagrado.
Sanctuary Lodge, Machu Picchu
The highlight of our journey was undoubtedly our trip to Machu Picchu. We stayed at Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located at the top of the mountain, right at the entrance to Machu Picchu.
With just 31 rooms and suites, this exclusive retreat offers unparalleled convenience and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Being so close to the citadel allowed us to explore the ruins in the tranquil light of early morning and late afternoon, avoiding the crowds and soaking in the atmosphere.
The lodge’s intimate setting blends luxury with the natural beauty of the Andes. Given its unique location and limited availability, we recommend booking well in advance — ideally 6 to 9 months ahead.
Hiram Bingham Train
From the foothills of Machu Picchu back to Cusco, we experienced a luxurious evening ride to Cusco on the Hiram Bingham Train. Named after the explorer who rediscovered Machu Picchu, this train offers a nostalgic return to the elegance of the 1920’s.
The evening started with a welcome cocktail as we settled into the plush carriages. As the train wound its way through the stunning Andean landscape, we enjoyed a gourmet four-course dinner. The live entertainment added to the festive atmosphere, making the journey an unforgettable highlight.
For those taking the train to Machu Picchu, the experience begins with a brunch featuring Peruvian specialties. The train ride provides not only a luxurious mode of transportation, but also an immersive cultural experience with panoramic views. We cannot recommend it enough!
Monasterio, Cusco
We arrived in Cusco, where we stayed at Monasterio. This former monastery dates back to 1592 and we were awe struck as we entered the property through the cathedral late at night.
At this hotel, you are transported back in time, with cloistered courtyards, original frescoes, and antique furnishings. The hotel’s central location, just steps from Cusco’s main square, made it the perfect base for exploring the city.
Dining at OQRE and El Tupay was a highlight. You absolutely cannot miss the breakfast each morning, as it was our favorite during our whole trip! The rooms here can be a bit on the smaller side, so we personally recommend skipping the entry-level rooms. The other room categories are more comfortable and many have beautiful courtyard views.
Palacio Nazarenas, Cusco
Right next door, Palacio Nazarenas provides an equally luxurious but a distinctly different experience. This property is a smaller boutique hotel that is absolutely oozing with charm. It was our personal preference between the two Belmond hotels in Cusco, as we loved that it was more quaint.
Housed in a former palace and convent, this is an all-suite hotel that features garden views, pools views, and many suites have private balconies. The marble bathrooms are huge and the rooms are all a very comfortable size. They even offer oxygen-enriched air — a considerate feature for adjusting to Cusco’s high altitude.
The hotel’s Hypnôze Spa provides a unique array of treatments inspired by Inca and Andean traditions. Dining at Mauka is also highly recommended, thanks to their innovative menu. The outdoor pool offers a peaceful oasis to relax and soak up the sun after a long day exploring the city.
